How to design an enquiry form people actually finish

Conversion · 2 min read · Updated 29 Sept 2026

An enquiry form is often the most important element on a business website, and one of the least considered. Small changes can noticeably increase how many people finish it.

Your nameWhatsApp numberGet a call back
Visitors become enquiries when the path is short: one clear offer, one button, one short form.

Ask for less

Every extra required field is a reason to stop. For a first enquiry, a name and a phone or WhatsApp number is often enough. Ask for the rest in the follow-up conversation.

Label every field clearly

  • Put the label above the field, not only as placeholder text that disappears.
  • Mark optional fields as optional instead of marking every required one.
  • Use the right input type so phones show a number keypad and email fields show the @ key.

A form that quietly stops working is one of the most expensive problems a website can have.

Make errors helpful

Say which field has a problem and how to fix it, next to that field. "Enter a 10 digit phone number" helps far more than "Invalid input".

Tell people what happens next

A single line under the button, such as "We reply within one working day", reduces hesitation. After submission, show a clear confirmation so people know it worked, and offer WhatsApp for anyone who prefers to talk right away.

Test the form on your own phone once a month. A form that quietly stops working is one of the most expensive problems a website can have.

A short example

Put it into practice.

  1. The problem

People start your enquiry form, but many leave before sending it.

  2. Step 1

Cut the form to name and phone or WhatsApp number, with the rest optional

  3. Step 2

Write a button label that says what happens, such as “Get a call back”

  4. Step 3

Show a clear thank-you message and reply within a working day

  5. The plan

The plan: a short form and a fast reply, so the first message never gets lost.
