How to read a monthly SEO report without being an expert

SEO · 2 min read · Updated 29 Sept 2026

A monthly SEO report should help you decide whether the work is worth continuing. Many reports are long and hard to judge. You do not need to be an expert to read one, you only need to know which few numbers connect to your business.

What a searcher sees: a Maps listing, a rating and a page that answers the question quickly.

Start with enquiries

The most important line in any report is how many calls, form submissions and WhatsApp messages came from the website, and where they came from. Everything else is a step towards that number. If a report never mentions enquiries, ask why.

Then look at search visibility

  • Clicks and impressions from Google Search Console: are they trending up over several months?
  • Queries: are people finding you for words that describe what you actually sell?
  • Pages: which pages bring visitors, and do those visitors take action?
  • For local businesses, calls and direction requests from your Google Business Profile.

Be careful with rankings

Rankings for a few chosen keywords can be useful, but they vary by place, device and time of day, and it is easy to pick keywords that look good and bring no customers. Treat them as a supporting detail rather than the headline.

SEO usually takes months to show clear movement, so one flat month is not a failure.

Check the numbers yourself

You should be able to open your own Analytics and Search Console accounts and see the same figures the report shows. If you cannot, ask for access. A trustworthy report survives being checked.

Be patient, but not blind

SEO usually takes months to show clear movement, so one flat month is not a failure. What you should see is steady, explained progress: what was done, what changed and what happens next. If several months pass with vague answers, that is the time to have a direct conversation.

A short example

Put it into practice.

  1. The problem

You get a monthly SEO report full of charts, and you cannot tell if it is going well.

  2. Step 1

Look first at enquiries and calls from search, not only traffic

  3. Step 2

Check which pages and searches bring people, and which have dropped

  4. Step 3

Ask what will be done next month, and why

  5. The plan

The plan: judge SEO by enquiries and clear next steps, not by the number of charts.
