WordPress or a custom build: which one fits your business?

Neither option is better in general. The right choice depends on how often you will edit the site, what it needs to do, and who will look after it after launch.

A simple picture of what a good business website is made of: clear pages, a visible next step and a price that matches the scope.

When WordPress is a good fit

  • You want to edit text, images and blog posts yourself without a developer.
  • The site is mostly pages, a blog and a few forms.
  • You want a large choice of plugins for things like bookings or galleries.

The trade-off is upkeep. Themes, plugins and WordPress itself need regular updates, and every extra plugin adds something that can slow the site down or need attention.

When a custom build makes sense

A custom site, built for example with Next.js, suits businesses with unusual layouts, custom features, or a strong need for speed and control. There is less to keep updated, and the design is not limited by a theme. The trade-off is that changes usually go through a developer unless a simple content editor is built in.

Whichever route you take, make sure you own the domain, hosting and code.

Questions that decide it

  • Who will update the content, and how often?
  • Do you need any feature that a standard plugin cannot give you?
  • How much do you want to spend on upkeep each year?
  • Will you need the site to grow into something larger later?

Whichever route you take, make sure you own the domain, hosting and code. That protects you far more than the technology choice itself.

A short example

Put it into practice.

  1. The problem

You are being told to choose WordPress or a custom build, and each side sounds convincing.

  2. Step 1

Write down what the site must do in the first year, and what it may need later

  3. Step 2

Compare who will update it, how often, and how comfortable they are with a dashboard

  4. Step 3

Ask each option for the ongoing cost: updates, security and hosting

  5. The plan

The plan: choose the simplest option that covers your first year, and make sure you can move away from it later.
