Technical SEO

About this tool.

An XML sitemap is a file that lists the pages you want search engines to find. It helps Google discover new and deep pages faster, which matters most for new sites and sites with few links pointing at them. This tool turns a plain list of addresses into a valid file, removes duplicates and tracking parameters, escapes special characters, and warns you about mixed http and https, mixed www and non-www, and the size limits.

How to use it
  1. Add your site address if you want to type short paths like /about/, then paste one page address per line. Add a date after an address to set when that page last changed.
  2. Choose the clean-up options, such as removing duplicates, and read the checks for anything that needs fixing.
  3. Copy the XML or download sitemap.xml, upload it to your site's root folder, add the Sitemap line to robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console.
Quick start:
Your pages

Lets you type short paths like /about/ instead of full links.

Add a date after an address (YYYY-MM-DD) to set that page's last change. Lines starting with # are ignored.

Clean-up

Match how your site really opens its pages, otherwise Google sees a redirect.

Optional fields
Your sitemap.xml
0 URLs0 B
<!-- Your sitemap appears here -->

Upload the file to your site's root so it opens at /sitemap.xml, then submit it in Google Search Console under Sitemaps.

Checks
  • Paste your page addresses on the left, one per line, and the sitemap appears here.

Good to know: List only pages you want in Google: pages that open normally, use your preferred address (https, and www or not) and are not blocked or set to noindex. Only use lastmod when it is the real date the page content changed. Google says it ignores priority and changefreq, so leaving them out is fine.

Questions

Good to know.

Where do I upload sitemap.xml?+
In the root folder of your site so it opens at https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. A sitemap can only list pages on the same site it sits on. On WordPress, an SEO plugin usually makes and updates one for you, and you can use this tool for extra or custom lists.
How do I submit my sitemap to Google?+
Open Google Search Console, choose your site, go to Sitemaps, type the sitemap address and press Submit. Also add a Sitemap line to your robots.txt file so every crawler can find it. Our Robots.txt Generator can add that line for you.
Does a sitemap improve my ranking?+
No. It helps search engines find your pages, but it does not make them rank higher. Pages still need to be useful and linked from your own site. A sitemap is most helpful for new sites, large sites and pages that are hard to reach by links.
Should I fill in priority and changefreq?+
You do not need to. Google has said it ignores both. The lastmod date can help, but only if it is accurate. If you cannot give real dates, leave lastmod out rather than putting today's date on every page.
What is the limit for one sitemap file?+
Each file can hold up to 50,000 addresses and be up to 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites split the list into several sitemap files and list them in one sitemap index file.
Is my list of pages sent anywhere?+
No. The sitemap is built inside your browser and nothing is uploaded. This tool does not crawl your website, so it only includes the addresses you give it.
